Avian influenza (H5N1): our current position and commitment to pet safety

At Raw Essentials, pet safety is our top priority.

At present, New Zealand remains free from highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI H5N1). While this virus is being closely monitored internationally, the current risk within New Zealand is considered very low.

We are aware of recent overseas reports involving avian influenza in pets, particularly in cats, and understand that this has raised questions about raw feeding. These cases appear to be linked to contaminated poultry products in regions where the virus is present.

Because Raw Essentials supplies raw food and does not use a heat-treatment step, our focus is on careful sourcing, supplier oversight, and risk management. We work with regulated suppliers who follow strict standards for animal health and food safety.

At this stage, there is no evidence of avian influenza affecting our products.

We continue to monitor developments both internationally and within New Zealand, and will respond appropriately if the situation changes.
