How Louie Found What Works

For Louie, itchy skin wasn’t one simple problem with one simple answer. It took patience, careful observation and a very individual approach to food, gut health and stress to help this much-loved cat feel more like herself again.

Meet Louie

Louie

When she first came to Raw Essentials, the then six-year-old domestic shorthair cat had already been struggling with food reactions for about a year.

Her owner, Jarrod, had tried numerous commercial foods, but nothing seemed to settle her skin.

“I had tried so many different commercial foods with no success. She would have hot spots along with hives and lick herself almost bald on her sides.”

For Jarrod, the goal was simple: help Louie feel comfortable again. The path there turned out to be anything but simple.

Learning what works for Louie

With sensitive pets, sometimes the most useful thing we can do is simplify.

Louie moved to a species-appropriate raw diet and, together with our Christchurch team, Jarrod began working out which prey sources suited her and which didn’t.

When trialling a new protein, we often recommend starting with 1 kg units rather than stocking up straight away for a chance to see how your pet responds first. Frozen units of 1 kg or less can be returned or exchanged in-store.

Rather than assuming there would be one universally ‘good’ or ‘bad’ protein, they watched Louie’s individual response to each prey source.

That meant plenty of careful trialling. A new prey source would be introduced in a small amount, watched for a response and removed again if Louie’s skin flared. At other times, foods were cautiously reintroduced once she had settled – and occasionally something that had suited her for months would later need to come off the menu.

“While Louie has been with Raw Essentials we’ve learnt what she can and can’t have and what foods she reacts worse to than others, so we know what to avoid.”

Salmon, for example, was one of her original favourites for about 18 months, but was removed after Jarrod noticed a reaction. Louie is now doing best with a much narrower selection of lamb, rabbit, hare, wallaby and small amounts of venison.

That is an important part of Louie’s story: sensitivities can change, and the plan has to change with them.

The gut was part of the picture too

Food wasn’t approached in isolation.

Louie also received nutritional support for her gut health, with her response carefully monitored along the way. Jarrod noticed particularly encouraging changes while she was receiving probiotic support, while a later break coincided with increased overgrooming and digestive signs.

A clean, species-appropriate diet can provide a strong nutritional foundation for healthy skin and coat, but every pet is different and nutrition is only one part of the picture.

Another clue emerged: stress

Louie also reminded us that licking isn’t always about food. The gut-brain axis is one reason we consider stress and digestion together, rather than treating them as completely separate issues.

At one stage Jarrod noticed an interesting pattern. Louie had been settled while he was home for a couple of weeks, but began licking her side again when he returned to work. Rather than immediately blaming another ingredient, he wondered whether separation anxiety might be contributing.

Later, during the disruption of moving house, Louie again became stressed and started pulling at her fur.

For cats especially, changes in routine, environment and household activity can show up as overgrooming and other behavioural changes.

It meant Louie’s plan needed to look beyond the bowl too.

Progress, not perfection

Louie’s journey hasn’t been a perfectly straight line.

There have been flare-ups, foods removed and occasionally reintroduced, periods of beautiful improvement and times when her skin needed another rethink. Even when most of her coat had returned, one side sometimes lagged behind the other.

But compared with where she began, the change has been enormous.

Jarrod told us that Louie was no longer needing prednisone and that veterinary visits for her skin had stopped.

“Louie loves being raw fed and the plus of having a healthy balanced diet has helped her so much.

Going to Raw Essentials is the best decision I have made for Louie!”

Louie’s lesson: look beyond the itch

Louie is a great example of why there is rarely a one-size-fits-all answer to itchy skin.

Her progress came from looking for patterns, simplifying her diet, finding foods that suited her, supporting gut health and recognising when stress might also be playing a part.

It also required something less glamorous but just as important: patience.

For pets with recurring skin problems, improvement may be gradual and the plan may need to evolve. What matters is looking at the whole animal rather than chasing each individual flare.

Today, Louie has a more limited menu than the average cat – but she also has food she loves, an owner who knows her patterns exceptionally well and our Raw Essentials team to help adjust the plan when she throws everyone another curveball.

Is your cat licking their fur away?

Cats don’t always show itchy skin by scratching. Excessive licking, overgrooming, thinning fur, bald patches, scabs and recurrent irritation can all be clues.

At Raw Essentials, we can help you look at your pet’s complete diet, gut health and possible patterns surrounding their skin concerns, while working alongside your veterinarian where medical investigation or treatment is needed.
