Skin Spotlight

Itchy skin, paws and ears can have more than one contributing factor. Nutrition and gut health are important foundations, but environmental triggers, stress, parasites, infection and other health factors may also play a role.

The articles below explore these areas in more detail, so you can better understand possible contributors, practical ways to support your pet at home, and when veterinary care may be needed.

Look Beyond the Itch

At Raw Essentials, we look beyond the sore or itchy area. We start by understanding the whole picture: what your pet eats, digestive health, veterinary history, environment, seasonality and any patterns surrounding their flare-ups.

Our goal is to identify and reduce contributing factors wherever possible, rather than focusing only on the visible itch.

Food may be directly relevant for some pets, particularly when a specific dietary ingredient is contributing to the problem. Good nutrition also supplies the nutrients needed to support normal skin-barrier, skin and coat health.

We generally begin by simplifying the diet and reviewing everything the pet consumes. That includes meals, treats, chews, supplements, flavoured medications, table scraps and food offered by other people. Where food sensitivity is suspected, a carefully planned novel-protein feeding plan may help investigate whether a dietary ingredient is contributing.

The environment matters too. Grasses, pollen, dust mites, mould, plants, damp conditions, bedding, carpets, cleaning products and fragrances may all play a part. Triggers may be seasonal or present throughout the year. We cannot always remove them completely, but noticing patterns can provide valuable clues.

Parasites and secondary bacterial or yeast infections can also intensify itching. Veterinary assessment is particularly important when there is broken skin, odour, discharge, pain, infection or significant inflammation.

A well-planned, species-appropriate diet provides a strong foundation for normal skin and coat health. Nutritional support can sit alongside veterinary investigation and treatment as part of a practical, individualised plan.
